Heat Pumps

Keeping Your Heat Pump Working in Tip-Top Condition

Do heat pumps needs servicing?

HAVING spent a big chunk of money on a new renewable energy heating system, you’ll want to ensure it gives you many years’ hassle-free service.

While good-quality European heat pumps have an expected lifespan of at least 15 plus years, that can be extended to 20-25 years by regular maintenance and servicing.

The good news is that, unlike fossil fuel boilers, where burning fuel at high temperatures takes it toll, heat pumps are pretty solid-state, have low maintenance needs and rarely need expensive new parts.

Although air-source heat pumps require little ongoing maintenance once installed, they still need servicing to keep them working to optimum performance. A heat pump that is not operating correctly can lose up to 25% of its efficiency in both under performance and operating energy consumption.

As with your old oil or gas boiler regular servicing can:

  • Ensure long and efficient operation,
  • Spot any small problems early, thereby minimising the risk of a sudden breakdown,
  • Prevent dust, dirt, and debris building up inside the heat pump which may reduce heat transfer and therefore efficiency.
  • Ensure optimal running at lowest energy consumption, thereby minimising your carbon footprint, and your electricity bills.
  • Maintain your Warranty

It is normally a requirement of manufacturers that your heat pump is serviced annually if the warranty is to remain valid and it is also a requirement under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for those who received the £7,500 Government grant.

What the service looks at:

Checks carried out during servicing will cover such things as:

  • Visual checks for any obvious leaks, damage or obstructions and repairs if needed
  • Full diagnostic checks to ensure the system, including cylinder, is working as it should – such as checking operation of motorised valves and cleaning filter
  • Testing the heat pump to ensure it is running at its most efficient
  • Checking refrigerant levels and topping up where necessary
  • Checking flow-rates and pressures
  • Checking the electrical system
  • Professional advice on running the system efficiently

How much does a heat pump service cost?

The cost of a service for an air source heat pump is £225 including VAT. Additional charges may apply if replacement parts are required. To book a heat pump service contact us today.
