Large Ground Source System and Solar for Country House, Sissinghurst

Two Stiebel-Eltron WPE-I 33KW ground source heat pumps

One 700 buffer cylinder

Two x 500l hot water cylinders

3.6km of ground loops in 18 x 200m trenches

28KW solar PV array

The customer was renovating and extending a large country house of over 500m2 in Kent and wanted a renewables solution.

The house had a near-by paddock that was just large enough to run the 3.6km of pipework needed, in 18 trenches of 100m each, to cover the heat load.

After installing the pipework and a 36-port chamber we ran 72mm header pipes back to the house and into the basement plant room. Once the paddock had been reinstated, we insalled a 72-panel, 30KW solar PV array on top of the the pipwork.

We removed a large section of the ground floor to carefully lower the two x 33KW Stiebel-Eltron WPE-I ground source heat pumps, weighing 300kg each, into the basement plant room, along with a 700l buffer.

At the same time we installed 2 x 500l hot water cylinders to serve separate sections of the four-storey property.

During the renovation work, the customers were living on one floor while the other floors were being refurbished. The ground floor and the modern extension benefited from nderfloor heatin, with new radiators installed on the upper floors and sized to run as a lower temperature system.
